Remember our sweet little shop on Hill Street?

Andy and I have spent the last several months renovating and updating every inch of this lovely historic Bend Mill House, turning it into a tranquil, airy two bedroom vacation home. It's still surrounded by aromatic, flowering herb gardens and filled with years of happy memories.

Renovating a 1921 home has been a fascinating, challenging project. We enlisted the help of a couple friends, but did the vast majority of the work ourselves, and along the way, we learned more about construction than we ever expected to. Our talented friend, Ed, brought his master woodworking skills and was a tremendous help, building cabinets and counters and a great deal more. We're really grateful for his expertise and patience (teaching us and keeping us from making costly mistakes) and could never have pulled off this project without him.

We used materials from the original structure wherever possible and eco-friendly, no-VOC finishes. The decor is simple and stylish, a blend of mid-century modern and modern industrial. It is, of course, filled with interesting plants and flowers and a little scientific equipment from our skin care lab (beakers and flasks in lieu of traditional vases). We found a treasure trove of antique botanical prints from the mid-1800's and chose herbs that are growing in the front garden and in wilds of Central Oregon to decorate the walls.

If you visited our shop at Hill Street, you'll notice that the front looks exactly the same, but the inside is totally different! The house is tiny- just 600 square feet, but the vaulted ceilings in the front rooms give it an open, airy feel. Andy and Ed cut a large space in a wall that previously seperated the retail store and our lab and that really opened up the space. Our colorful retail store is now a quiet living room, looking into an open kitchen with gorgeous wood counters (thanks, Ed!). The old shipping area is now a bathroom. Andy put weeks of work into artfully tiling the shower. Guests will enjoy a collection of Angelina Skincare lotions, soaps and shower gels during their stay. Plenty of natural light, white and wood, plans and cozy textures bring a feeling of calm to the space.
